We have started the digitisation of the Cathedral in Kamien Pomorski
March 2, 2022
We have embarked on the first stage of the project „Digitisation of the Kamien Pomorski Cathedral – a journey through 900 years of Christianity in Western Pomerania”, which aims to faithfully, digitally, three-dimensionally and virtually reconstruct the architecture of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist and the collection of movable relics (paintings, sculpture, artistic crafts) in it, based on the latest measurement and visualisation technologies and a mix of virtual reality, and to make the results and knowledge of this unique resource available.
In harsh winter conditions, working in the cooled interior of the cathedral, we comprehensively digitise the entire historic resource collected over many centuries at this unique site. Due to their diversity, we use the full spectrum of 2D/3D digitisation tools, including but not limited to: medium-format cameras for documentary photography, gigapanoramas and gigapixel photography, laser scanners to acquire a point cloud of the architecture of the entire church, structured white light optical scanners to reconstruct in 3D form architectural details (including sculpted keystones, consoles and capitals), monuments of sculpture and artistic craftsmanship collected mainly in the chapter house and the treasury, drones to acquire the texture of the body of the church and video sequences to develop films documenting the monument, 3D cameras to generate a virtual tour of the entire interior, and many other technological innovations to support the process of digitisation, inventory and, ultimately, virtualisation of this magnificent Historic Monument.
