The Life of Saint John the Baptist

Bartholomaeus Fichtenberger ( born c. 1530, died 1592) – German painter, master and member of the elders of the Guild of Painters in Wroclaw, active in this city in the second half of the 16th century. Co-author of the main altar of the Cathedral in Wroclaw, for which he executed the paintings on the altar wings in 1591.

When the altar cabinet is closed for the first time, eight painting quatrefoils with scenes from the life of Saint John the Baptist, patron of Wroclaw Cathedral, appear. These scenes are as follows:

  • Annunciation to Zachariah of the conception and birth of Saint John the Baptist
  • The Visitation of Saint Elizabeth by Mary, Mother of Jesus
  • The circumcision and naming of John
  • The envoys of the Pharisees and Sadducees at John’s house
  • The baptism of Jesus
  • John’s pointing to Christ
  • John admonishing Herod
  • The martyrdom of John the Baptist
