Fathers of the Western Church

Bartholomaeus Fichtenberger (born ca. 1530, died 1592) was a German painter, master, and elder of the painters’ guild in Wrocław, active in this city in the second half of the 16th century. He was a co-author of the main altar of the Wrocław Cathedral, for which he created paintings on the altar wings in 1591. When the altar cabinet is first closed, four painted panels are revealed, depicting portraits of the Fathers of the Western Church: St. Ambrose, St. Augustine, St. Gregory the Great, and St. Jerome.
