The Three Marys at the Tomb of Jesus

Another testimony to the Resurrection comes from the three women named Mary.

Having purchased spices, which were not available earlier due to the Sabbath, they went to the Master’s tomb to complete the Jewish ritual of anointing the deceased. At the grotto, they found the stone rolled away and an angel asking why they sought the living among the dead. In the Middle Ages, the so-called liturgical dramatizations gained great popularity.

These were paratheatrical enactments woven into the liturgy, especially during the observance of the Easter Triduum. On Easter Sunday, during the Resurrection, clerics dressed as women would go to a designated place in the church, symbolizing the Savior’s tomb. There they would meet an angel who would address them with the words of Scripture. Stoss undoubtedly participated in such practices many times.
