The Flagellation of Christ

The center of the painting is occupied by the standing figure of Christ, whose hands are tied behind him to a column. Jesus is draped in a white perizonium. The torturer on the left is dressed in a white shirt covering half of his chest, with his hips wrapped in a brightly colored green garment. He holds a whip above his head in his right hand and rods in his left.

The torturer on the right is similarly dressed, wrapped in a red cloth, wearing brown and white trousers and high boots. He holds the whip with both hands, covering half of his face. Their complexion is significantly darker than Christ’s, whose white body forms a contrasting center in the composition.

The background is brown, with barely discernible figures in shades of gray. Probably in the background, to the left behind one of the torturers, there is a barely visible cryptoportrait of Michael Willmann.
