Sabre

Sabre

Sabre with an eagle hilt; materials: steel, gilded brass; techniques: etching and engraving. Poland, 1791. The pommel is shaped as an eagle’s head with engraved feathers. On top of the head there is a prominent knob with the peened tang of the blade. From beneath the beak extends a wide, openwork knuckle guard, continuing into an openwork guard plate. Near the guard there is a ring widening toward the knuckle guard, holding a wooden grip covered in brown leather and wrapped with a twisted silver wire in a braid pattern.

The blade is steel, with two fullers on both sides, the second near the spine; the point is asymmetrical. The blade is etched on both sides. On the outer face, there is an etched inscription framed by vegetal scrolls: “Vivat Naród z Królem” (“Long live the Nation with the King”); below it a royal crown, beneath which is the monogram “SAR,” and the inscription “Król z Narodem” (“The King with the Nation”). On the inner face, there is an etched inscription framed by vegetal scrolls: “Konstytucja” (“Constitution”); below it a mounted soldier of the national cavalry with a sabre raised upward, and further below: “Dzień 3 Maja -1793 Ru” (“3rd of May Day – 1793”).
