Sapper, 4th Infantry Regiment of the Duchy of Warsaw (1807–1812) – Parade Dress
A sapper in parade dress. The upper part of the sapper’s apron is tucked under the jacket. The axe is on the shoulder. The sapper’s face is adorned with a full beard—an essential element of this formation’s appearance. In addition to the axe, the sapper was armed with a flintlock musket, often shorter than the infantry version (cavalry or dragoon), and a briquet saber. Although briquet sabers often had beautifully decorated hilts, they were also useful tools. The musket cartridge box is located on the main belt.
The belt is made of white leather and fastened with a brass buckle featuring a grenadier’s grenade. On the chest are crossed white leather belts for the saber/bayonet and the axe cover. The axe was carried in it with the head pointing toward the ground. They are decorated with brass emblems of grenades and sapper axes. Navy blue woolen trousers with crimson piping and white gaiters are worn. Parades were often performed without knapsacks.
