Sapper Axe

Sapper Axe

A powerful sapper axe—the symbol of this formation—used both during parades and in combat. Its forged, heavy head could handle the barricaded doors or windows of assaulted buildings. A few sappers could use such tools to hack a path for infantry trapped in abatis. It was also useful for camp work and repairing crossings during marches. The axe head is mounted on a nearly meter-long handle made of hard wood painted black. The fitting for the lower part of the handle is made of brass. Small brass balls on the fittings testify to the craftsmanship and care taken in making this piece of sapper equipment.
