Sapper Bearskin (Bermyca), 4th Infantry Regiment of the Duchy of Warsaw (1807–1812)
A characteristic tall hat made of black fur. A classic bearskin should be made of bear fur. However, it is doubtful whether there was enough such fur for the numerous formations wearing similar headgear. Fur from other animals was used interchangeably. The cord of the bearskin is crimson. It consists of two woven garlands and two flounders with tassels. The flounders are larger than those on the square caps and are oval. The chin strap is made of brass scales. It is attached with bosses featuring a flaming grenade. The crimson plume, made of feathers, is approx. 35 cm high. On the top of the bearskin, slightly toward the back, we see the so-called “monkey’s bottom.” This is a round element made of crimson cloth with a white cross sewn onto it. At the very peak of the bearskin, a single crimson tassel is draped forward.
