Bicorn Hat of an Officer of the 4th Infantry Regiment (1810–1814)
Bicorn Hat of an Officer of the 4th Infantry Regiment (1810–1814)
The bicorn hat is made of black felt. It is edged with black camel hair tape. On the left side is a double gold lace holding a white cockade. The lace is half an inch wide and fastened with a large uniform button featuring the number 4. Behind the cockade, in a socket, a short crimson plume is attached, indicating the officer belongs to a grenadier company. The silver tassels hanging from the corners of the hat were not actually included in the 1810 Dress Regulations, but they are frequently seen in period iconography. The white cockade was used by the troops of the Duchy of Warsaw as a national identifier. Introduced by the order of the Commander-in-Chief, Prince Józef Poniatowski, its color referenced the military traditions of the First Republic of Poland.
