Captain of the Grenadiers, 4th Infantry Regiment of the Duchy of Warsaw (1807–1812) – Campaign Gear
The officer is dressed in an undress uniform with equipment useful during campaigns and marches. The coat, vest, and hat are as before. The trousers are navy blue wool. On his feet are soldier’s shoes and black gaiters. On his chest is a brass gorget with the silver eagle of the Duchy of Warsaw.
Below it, the ribbon (bar) of the Order of the Legion of Honour is visible. An officer’s pouch is slung over the shoulder, made of brown leather with seams edged in green leather. The pouch follows the 1812 French Bardin regulation pattern. It held small personal items and rations. Tucked into the belt is a flintlock pistol. This is not regulation armament, but it allowed for defense in emergencies. In his hand is a walking stick (here a metal-shod cane), often seen with officers of that era during marches or while off duty.
