Soldier's Knapsack

Soldier’s Knapsack

A soldier’s knapsack made according to patterns used in the French army. It is sewn from cowhide. The seams are additionally reinforced with smooth leather edging. The shoulder straps and coat straps are made of white leather. The flap is fastened with three leather straps—also white. Loops are sewn onto the top of the flap, allowing the overcoat and other items needed on a march or campaign (pot, pan, firewood, etc.) to be strapped on. Period iconography often shows marching troops burdened with various items. A soldier carried his belongings in the knapsack. It had to hold not only his uniform and underwear but also rations, spare ammunition, hygiene supplies, equipment for cleaning weapons and gear, a spare shoe, and many other things too numerous to mention. It was heavy, but soldiers tried not to lose it, as their survival often depended on its contents.
