Private of the Fusilier Company, 4th Infantry Regiment of the Duchy of Warsaw (1807–1812) – Loading Process
The fusilier is captured in the process of loading his weapon. The flintlock musket was loaded in 12 so-called “times” (steps). Each of these was described in detail in the regulations. This system served to teach weapon handling. In this way, a trained soldier—whether during drills or in battle—would load the weapon independently after the appropriate command was given. The fusilier has just executed the command for the 2nd step: “Open – Pan.”
We can see the open pan in the musket lock, and the right hand is reaching into the cartridge box for a charge. Cartridges are visible inside the box. The fusilier is armed with a French Model 1777 AN IX flintlock musket with a socket bayonet. The bayonet is carried in a black leather scabbard attached to the sword belt. Often, fusiliers did not wear separate sword belts, and the bayonet was attached to a frog on the cartridge box belt. The fusilier’s appearance is completed by crossed white leather belts on the chest and a cowhide knapsack with a rolled gray overcoat.
