Officer’s Surtout, 2nd Infantry Regiment of the Duchy of Warsaw (1810–1814)
The surtout was a type of overcoat worn over the dress coat in cold weather. It was made entirely of navy blue wool with a linen lining. According to the 1810 “Dress Regulations,” it should be double-breasted with two rows of 7 large buttons each. The specimen shown here is single-breasted. Gold infantry captain epaulettes are visible on the shoulders: the fringed epaulette on the left and the counter-epaulette on the right. The ribbon of the Order of Saint Stanislaus is attached to a buttonhole.
