Presentation of Jesus in the Temple

The scene of the presentation in the temple refers to the childhood of Jesus, but it also evokes thoughts of the Passion.

The elderly Simeon, taking the Messiah in his arms, foretells to a terrified Mary of future suffering. These prophetic words are one of the bases for the belief that the Mother of God co-suffered with Christ (Latin: Compassio Mariae). This sorrow, in turn, proves that Mary was the Co-Redemptrix (Latin: Coredemptrix) of the world. The Krakow altarpiece is a captivating apologia for the Mother of God; we must keep this in mind when viewing the individual compositions.
