Mass Chalice

High, hexafoil foot with smooth fields. Each field is decorated with an engraved vine scroll with bunches of grapes; one field features a Eucharistic motif (cross/host in glory), enclosed within a delicate beaded outline. A low openwork frieze with a geometric design runs along the base of the foot.

The stem is hexagonal and profiled. Its upper section is adorned with two zones of rectangular enameled panels in shades of white, azure, and green, featuring quatrefoil motifs. Between these zones lies a knop in the form of a flattened sphere, covered with dense, plastic ornamentation featuring motifs of leaves and grape clusters.

The plain cup is set in a calyx topped with a tracery frieze. An inscription band with colored enamel runs around the calyx—majuscule letters in blue on a light background, separated by green crosses. Inscription: CALICEM SALUTAREM ACCIPIAM (“I will take the cup of salvation”, Psalm 116).

Engraved inscription on the bottom of the foot: Dr. Probst, Dr. Gleich, Dr. Wick/ Dr. v. Montbach, Dr. Seltmann, Scholz/ Dr. Speil, Stiller, Marx, Dr. Flassig / Dr. Herbig, Dr. Konig, Dr. Mandel/ Bolik, Neuber, Staude/ 17. VI. 1898.
Stamped on the rim: J. SHLOSSAREK/ BRESLAU and the German national silver standard mark (800).

The whole piece is maintained in the Neo-Gothic/Neo-Renaissance style typical of the late 19th century, with a clear reference to the forms of modern Silesian chalices (hexafoil foot, high stem, widely flared cup). It is a historicizing chalice produced by the J. Schlossarek ecclesiastical and jewelry manufactory—a large Wrocław goldsmithing establishment operating since 1882, specializing in liturgical vessels. The chalice was likely a collective gift (foundation) from the community of Wrocław academics.
