Life of Saint John the Baptist

Bartholomaeus Fichtenberger (born ca. 1530, died 1592) was a German painter, master, and elder of the painters’ guild in Wrocław, active in this city in the second half of the 16th century. He was a co-author of the main altar of the Wrocław Cathedral, for which he created paintings on the altar wings in 1591.

After the first closing of the altar cabinet, eight painted panels are revealed, depicting scenes from the life of Saint John the Baptist, the patron of the Wrocław Cathedral. These scenes are:

  • The Annunciation to Zechariah of the conception and birth of Saint John the Baptist
  • The Visitation of Saint Elizabeth by Mary, the Mother of Jesus
  • The Circumcision and Naming of John
  • The Envoys of the Pharisees and Sadducees with John
  • The Baptism of Jesus
  • John’s Indication of Christ
  • John Admonishing Herod
  • The Martyrdom of John the Baptist
