Life and Ancestors of Mary

In June 1891, Józef Mehoffer and Stanisław Wyspiański began working on the cartoons for the 36 panels of the window, depicting the ancestors and scenes from the life of Mary. Wyspiański created the general (compositional) sketch, according to which the cartoons for individual panels were developed. The sketch survived the war (found in 1967), but its current location is unknown.

The cycle is maintained in the style of late historicism, freely referring to the art of the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries.

The cycle consists of: The Ancestors of Mary; scenes from the life of Mary in a descending arrangement from left to right: The Annunciation to Joachim, The Meeting at the Golden Gate, The Presentation of Mary in the Temple, The Betrothal of Mary and Joseph, The Annunciation, The Visitation, The Nativity, The Adoration of the Magi, The Angel Ordering Joseph to Flee to Egypt, The Flight into Egypt, The Twelve-Year-Old Jesus Teaching in the Temple, The Wedding at Cana, The Crucifixion, The Descent from the Cross, The Descent of the Holy Spirit, The Dormition of Mary, Zechariah.
