Corporal of the Voltigeur Company, 4th Infantry Regiment of the Duchy of Warsaw

Corporal of the Voltigeur Company, 4th Infantry Regiment of the Duchy of Warsaw (1807–1812)

The voltigeur wears a navy blue jacket (modeled on the Polish jacket) with yellow lapels, a white collar, and crimson cuffs fastened with a navy blue tab. The piping on the lapels is crimson; all other piping is yellow. Brass buttons feature the number “4.” The markers of a voltigeur company are green epaulettes (with a crimson twist), a green and yellow plume, and a briquet saber with a green sword knot. A voltigeur horn is attached to the cartridge box; a similar one could be attached to the cap instead of the eagle. On his legs, he wears czechczery—linen trousers—and black wool gaiters. The cap features a brass front plate with the number “4,” the eagle, and the white cockade of the Duchy of Warsaw. The cap’s visor is brass-bound, with a chin strap made of brass scales and white cords. The rank of corporal is indicated by two yellow stripes on the jacket sleeves and a yellow band around the cap. Three crimson long-service chevrons are located on the left arm. Armament consists of a French Model 1777 AN IX flintlock musket in the dragoon version with a socket bayonet and a briquet saber. The voltigeur’s appearance is completed by crossed white leather belts for the cartridge box and sword belt on the chest, and a cowhide knapsack with a rolled gray overcoat.
