Jesse Tree
In the predella of the altarpiece, there is the Jesse Tree.
Such a solution is rare and indicates that the author of the altarpiece’s iconographic program sought exceptional and original solutions.
In the center of the predella, a sleeping patriarch Jesse is shown, from whose body a twisted trunk grows. On the branches, depicted in dynamic poses, are representatives of successive generations of Israel, considered to be the foretelling of Christ’s earthly genealogy.
This extraordinary image is a literal illustration of the words from the Book of Isaiah.
