Glory of Heaven

The ceiling of the presbytery depicts Gloria Celestis, the Glory of Heaven. The Holy Trinity is shown in a golden glory. Below, at the center of the composition, is the archangel Michael. Clad in armor and holding a key, he casts down the rebellious angel.

On either side of the Holy Trinity are two archangels: Gabriel with a lily, girded with a green ribbon, and Raphael with a traveler’s staff. The remaining four archangels are painted on either side of archangel Michael: Barachiel is depicted with flowers; Jehudiel holds a crown; Uriel has a censer with flames burning inside; and Sealtiel has hands folded in prayer.

At the front of the fresco, four guardian angels are painted: Daromiel, Tsefoniel, Uriel, and Kachniel. The inscription beneath them reads: “Four angels, guardians of the world.” A small angel in the space between the windows holds a phylactery with the inscription “Gloria in excelsis Deo – Glory to God in the highest.” The remaining angels are playing musical instruments.
