Descent from the Cross

The scene of the Descent from the Cross is full of calm and tranquility.

The body of Jesus, respectfully laid on a white shroud, is embraced by His mother, frozen in silent grief over the loss of her beloved Son. Mary Magdalene grasps the forearm of the Master, ready to anoint it with spices from a jar; only recently, in the house of Simon, she had poured oil on His feet and wiped them with her own hair.

The rich headdress on the woman’s head likely reminds us of her former “worldly” life and the sins that were forgiven. On the side, two dignified men, secret disciples of Jesus – Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea, discuss the details of the burial.
