National Cavalry officer's cap
National Cavalry officer’s cap from 1785–1789 (20th-century copy) with a plume holder (szkofia).
Szkofia: gilded brass, Poland, 18th century; cap: cloth, lambskin, feathers, Poland, 20th century.
The cap is made of red cloth, with a square top and three vertical pleats on the sides of each section. At the bottom, there is a black band made of Astrakhan lambskin. A crimson cord, braided and passing through three sections, hangs by the plume holder and a white cockade. Black lining. The szkofia, or plume ornamental clasp. Below the crown, the royal monogram “SAR” of Stanisław August Poniatowski is set within a laurel wreath tied with a ribbon. A double bow is positioned above the crown, topped by a representation of four ostrich feathers. At the back of the szkofia, there is a socket holding three white feathers. A white royal cockade is placed under the szkofia.
