Corpus Campanae Poloniae: Historic bells in 3D

We are delighted to announce the completion of the first stage of the pioneering project “Corpus Campanae Poloniae: Historic Bells of Poland in 3D.” Our team has carried out a comprehensive digitalization of the most precious historic bells, creating a digital bridge between medieval craftsmanship and the technology of the future.

Why bells?

Historic bells are one of the most fascinating yet most neglected segments of Polish heritage. Hidden high in bell towers, they are normally inaccessible to visitors. By using 3D laser and optical scanning, advanced HDR documentation, and spatial microphones, we have “brought them down” from the towers and made them available to every Internet user.

What have we achieved?

As part of the task, while maintaining the original budget of PLN 253,300.00, we covered as many as 20 unique objects (exceeding the planned number of 19 bells). Our activities included:

  • 3D Models and Digital Archive: We created precise 3D models with a resolution of up to 0.1 mm, allowing for the analysis of inscriptions and ornaments invisible to the naked eye.
  • Sound Heritage: We recorded the authentic sound of the bells in the highest quality, creating a unique phonic library.
  • Virtual Tours: We invite you to explore the interiors of bell towers through interactive VR tours and spherical panoramas.
  • Accessibility without barriers: All materials have been prepared in accordance with the WCAG 2.1 standard, ensuring full access for people with disabilities and seniors.

Specialized acoustic analyses and master copies of all models have also been deposited at the National Institute of Cultural Heritage, securing this data for future generations of conservators and researchers.

Funding

Co-financed by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage from the Culture Promotion Fund – a state earmarked fund, in the amount of PLN 200,000.
