Birth of Mary

The conception and birth of Mary are not mentioned in any of the Gospels.

The literary source of these scenes is the Apocrypha, texts that were very popular throughout the Middle Ages but were never included in the canon of the Universal Church’s writings. The birth of Mary is accompanied by experienced women who receive the child, prepare a bath near the fireplace, and make a meal for the exhausted mother. This method of depiction is primarily rooted in 15th-century Netherlandish painting, which Stoss likely knew firsthand.
