Ascension of Christ

The composition of this scene is centripetal. The apostles, along with Mary, surround the rock from which Christ has just ascended to the Father. Their reverent worship, fear, and sadness at the separation make them continue to search for the Master in the now empty sky. The swirling garments overlap, creating a whirlpool effect as if the witnesses of the Ascension themselves are floating in a mystical dance. This marks the end of Christ’s earthly journey, yet there remains a trace of his physical presence: on the mountain peak, the imprints of his bare feet are clearly outlined, miraculously left in the hard rock.
