Adoration of the Shepherds

Mary adores Jesus, kneeling with her hands folded on her chest. This gesture evokes humility, a trait (humilitas in Latin) considered the source of all virtues in the Middle Ages. The child is laid directly on the ground, and the entire event takes place not in a stable or cave (as Nativity is depicted in the East), but in the ruins of David’s palace, reminiscent of the former splendor of Israel. The figure of St. Joseph is also highlighted, as the cult of the Blessed Virgin Mary’s spouse began to gain prominence only in the 15th century; previously, his role in the history of Salvation was limited to silent participation.
