Entombment

The Passion Triptych, depicting three scenes from the Passion of the Savior on the outer side of the right movable wing, concludes with the Entombment.

In these compositions, the influence of 15th-century Netherlandish painting is particularly evident. The medieval system of artist education included a crucial mandate for journeyman travel. Upon completing their education, future masters were required to embark on a journey, the length of which was regulated by local guild laws (usually from two to four years).

We do not know where Stoss traveled, but much evidence suggests that the Netherlands were the destination of his journey. His works reveal surprising similarities to the paintings of Netherlandish artists, particularly those of Roger van der Weyden.
