Twelve-Year-Old Jesus in the Temple
Despite the complex formal efforts to create a sense of space (a receding floor, an openwork structure in the middle of the temple), the composition of the panel is flat and the effect achieved is unconvincing.
The arrangement of the figures around Jesus borders on caricature. It is hard to believe that the awkward effect of the “crouching” man in the central arch was intentional. It cannot be ruled out that such shortcomings are the result of the involvement of numerous assistants and apprentices.
