Adoration of the Magi

The scene of the Adoration of the Magi (Epiphany) symbolizes the homage paid to the newborn God by representatives of all peoples of the earth.

In keeping with tradition, Stoss depicted the biblical wise men as kings in the full splendor of their rich garments. Particularly striking is the slender figure of the Moor, who elegantly and courtly removes his head covering before the infant Jesus. At his feet stretches a painted meadow. Large sections of some panels have been rendered in painting. Stoss’s participation in the creation of these compositions cannot be ruled out.
