Annunciation to Mary
By consenting to conceive the Messiah (“Let it be to me according to your word”), Mary initiates the history of Salvation. The sculptor conveyed the extraordinariness of this scene through the movement of the garments. The rich, cross-folded dress of the seated Mary is counterbalanced by the dynamically billowing robe of the heavenly messenger. The figures almost disappear under the masses of material.
